The Big Show is Ready

Kaeta loves playing with her cousin Clara.  A couple of weeks ago, they got to spend the day together.

They had a good time coloring.  At one point, Clara came over to Karianne and announced, “The Big Show is ready!”

“What’s the Big Show?” Karianne asked.

“I-unno,” Clara said, shrugging!  But then she got down on her hands like this, and Kaeta came over and joined her:

Now that’s a Big Show!  I see breakdancing contests in their future.

And now, an assortment of other photos we’ve been meaning to post.  Here’s one from when Kaeta got to see her friend Abigail recently:

Kaeta and Jonah in their Christmas outfits:

Jonah knows he looks good in this suit.  He kind struts around in it.

Old News

We love our son.  We really do!  But all the jokes about the second child getting less attention are in some ways true.  Not less attention, in Jonah’s case, but maybe less obsession.  How to put this?  Let’s just say, if I saw him eating a bug, but I was busy watching TV, I wouldn’t freak out and, y’know, do anything about it.

With that in mind, here are over-a-month-old pics from his first birthday.  Enjoy!

Father’s Masculinity Questioned by 3 Year Old Daughter

Last night I was sitting on the floor reading a book while the kids played.  Then Kaeta walked up to me with a big smile and said,

“Daddy, you could be a princess!  Princess Daddy.

I stared at her, not knowing how to respond.  Then she pulled out a little red plastic triangle, balanced it on my head, and said,

“Here’s your crown!”

So anyway, that was cute, but if any of you refer to me as “Her Highness,” I will be forced to go into my room and cry into my Sleeping Beauty pillow.  Er, I mean, do a bunch of pushups and karate kicks.

The Real Significance of the Coming Mayan Apocalypse

Did you know that, according to the ancient Mayan calendar, time will reset on December 21, 2012? This is prompting books with titles like 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl.  But it’d also our 10th wedding anniversary!

A friend from A&M suggested an apocalypse-themed anniversary party.  You know about the Wood Anniversary (5th) and the Crystal Anniversary (15th)… but did you know about the Apocalypse Anniversary?  What gift do you get someone when the world’s end is imminent?  (Answer: A Kohl’s giftcard and a trip to Starbucks.  Because that’s always the answer.)

This reminds me of a couple of songs I’ve written: One is called When We Rise, about experiencing the Resurrection with my wife — something I look forward to with great joy.  The other is called The Quetzalcoatl Waddle.  It’s about the biggest dance craze ever to hit the ancient Aztec city of Quetzalcoatl.

When you party with the Kurths…

…you never know what’s going to happen.

A gallery from the kids’ birthday party is finally up.  We had a costume party, with Jonah as Peter Pan and Kaeta and Tinkerbell.  Karianne was Wendy, and I was an unconvincing (read: not willing to shell out for a more authentic costume) Captain Hook.  Take note: we had a bouncy house, which is pretty much guaranteed to make your party rock.  At least among 3-10 year olds.  (And, um, 24-29 year olds, too.  A group of us “grown ups” got in there at the end of the party, started jumping around, and let’s just say Colin got so entangled that we nearly had to return him with the bouncy house rental.)

We’re trying hard to catch up with all the photos we want to post, so expect some more soon!
